Another Open Enrollment Period?

Medicare’s 2023 Open Enrollment Period, also known as the Annual Enrollment Period, concluded on December 7.

Since there are three other Enrollment Periods (Initial, General and Special) it is no surprise that when we hear about a fifth Enrollment Period – this one begins on January 1 and ends March 31 – we shake our heads in confusion.

Here’s who is eligible and how if works.
If you have a Medicare Advantage plan (with or without drug coverage) and find that it’s not working for your needs you can, during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period i) switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or, ii) drop Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare and join a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.

Please note that during this period you cannot:

  • Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan.
  • Join or switch a Medicare Part D drug plan if you only have Original Medicare.

You can only make one change during the Medicare Advantage OEP and any change will go into effect on the first day of the month following the month you make a change.
